Lib Dems Call for Action on Cost of Living Emergency
The Lib Dem Council Group on Test Valley Borough Council is to put forward a motion to Test Valley Borough Council to call on our local MP's to
put pressure on the government to implement measures to ease the cost of living crisis. The motion calls on our MP's to support a cut in VAT, implement an energy price cap for local businesses, of which they are open to uncapped bills, implement a price cap on heating oil for residents in rural communities and ensure the pensions triple-lock is restored.
Cllr Nik Daas said on the motion "I feel that as a local representative of Test Valley and the area I grew up in, I should take this opportunity to representative the views of residents on the biggest issues facing us all. As a Council, it is our duty to protect our residents and businesses, and by passing this motion we can take a step further to do this"
The Motion the Lib Dems Want to Pass:
This Council therefore declares a 'Cost of Living Emergency' in Test Valley and will
write to the local MPs calling on them to put pressure on the Government to:
1. Reduce the standard rate of VAT for one year, saving the average household at least £600 this year.
2. Ensure the government honours its commitment to reinstating the pensions triple lock to support Test Valley pensioners.
3. Implement an energy price cap on heating oil, where this currently disproportionately affects rural families.
4. Put in place an energy price cap for energy bills of Test Valley businesses, where they currently face uncapped energy bills.
