Lib Dems select Alex Payton to fight North West Hampshire
Local barrister Alex Payton has been re-selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for North West Hampshire. The Liberal Democrats are now ready to fight a general election, and are selecting candidates in key seats such as North West Hampshire. This follows reports that the new Prime Minister might go to the country early, before a possible recession and to take advantage of Labour in-fighting.
Alex has a strong record of fighting for local people and was the party's candidate for the area in 2015.
Alex said: "I am really proud to have been selected again and it would be a huge honour to represent this wonderful area.
"However, I am only too well aware that North West Hampshire does have its challenges. As such my three campaign priorities will be
- tackling the housing crisis by building the affordable housing we so badly need,
- combating the economic downturn and protecting local jobs threatened by Brexit and
- defending and improving services for children and young people.
"Our country is in crisis. The Conservatives have destroyed their reputation for economic competence, with investment plummeting putting thousands of jobs at risk. Meanwhile Labour has given up even trying to speak to the British people, and is engaged in a vicious fight with itself."
"Only the Liberal Democrats are an open, optimistic and united party committed to protecting Britain's role in the heart of Europe, spreading opportunity for the next generation and focusing on re-building the British economy to protect jobs and services."
The selection was confirmed at a meeting in Whitchurch when Alex met many of the new members who have joined since June 23rd.
Local party chair Len Gates said "We are well placed to fight a general election whenever it is held. Since the referendum the party has signed up fifty new members locally and over 17,500 across the country. Over the past month Liberal Democrats have made more gains than any other party in local elections. We have a new team of committed activists ready to support a strong local campaigner who will fight for the people of North West Hampshire."
