Andover residents were furious to learn that the local Conservative MP, Kit Malthouse, voted against forcing landlords to ensure their properties were fit for human habitation.

North West Hants Liberal Democrat chairman Len Gates said, "The Conservatives are letting down local renters. More protection is needed against the few bad landlords who fail to provide the right level of service to tenants. Inadequate heating, damp, unsafe electrics, and poor repairs should not be tolerated."

"The vote once again shows that the Conservatives' priority is just about home ownership at the top end of the spectrum. They have abandoned renters, the aspiring first time buyers and the middle-classes who either cannot afford a mortgage at the moment, or would prefer to rent" added Lib Dem campaigner Luigi Gregori.

"We are facing a housing crisis here and across the South East. We need more affordable homes, and these must be of a decent standard and be fit for purpose. Those who rent should not be handicapped by this choice and are entitled to expect a decent standard of home. We expect Test Valley Borough Council to enforce the laws that already exist to stamp out rogue landlords and ensure all homes in Andover are fit for purpose", said Lib Dem Councillor Katherine Bird.
